Organic prenatal vitamins guide

My husband and I have been organically living and even though organic foods and items are a lot more costly, it is an investment in our health as well as the future of our family.

Taking care of yourself during your pregnancy is the first step to building yourself a healthy baby. Since this will be our first little one, I have been looking for organic prenatal vitamins and this is what I have found out.

There are a lot of options that are out there, and many have no idea where to start when it comes to finding the right organic prenatal vitamin for their needs. Below are different brands that you should consider if you are opting to go the organic route. Be sure to check with your doctor about what products you will be putting into your body, as they will be able to tell you what your body needs and doesn’t need.

Eating a very healthy and balanced diet will always be the best way for you to be able to get minerals and vitamins that you need. But, even if you are eating healthy every single day and are following the food guide pyramid to a tee each day, it is still possible for you to not get everything that you need when it comes to nutrients and vitamins. Prenatal vitamins are something that your doctor may recommend to you if you are wanting to conceive, or if you are pregnant. They have been formulated to give you all of the nutrients and vitamins that you need and may be missing in your diet.

MegaFood – Baby & Me review

Just like with most other expectant mothers, my nutrition both pre- and postnatal is vital to me. I began reading a lot of about the nutritional requirements that are needed for a healthy pregnancy. I was taking most of the vitamins needed daily such as Iron, DHA, and B12, so I just needed to add a few things in to my diet that would help me out a just a bit.

I began a vegan diet and was reading a vegan survival guide that stated I needed at least 70g of Iron, calcium, Folate, omega-3 fatty acids, B12, and zinc as well as some other needed aspects of pregnancy health. Once I had all of this information, I began to search for the perfect prenatal vitamin that would work just for me without making me too sick. I talked with my obstetrician and she recommended MegaFood – Baby & Me. She stated that it would have everything I would need even being a vegan.

MegaFood Baby and Me

I am very glad that my obstetrician introduced me to Baby & Me. It is made with whole foods not that synthetic stuff and even though the dose is pretty large, it recommends 4 pills daily. And it tends to be a bit more expensive than I would have expected but it is worth the money. The one thing that you will notice first hand is that they taste horrible, so take them with a full glass of water. You can take them on an empty stomach, because they are all natural, they won’t make you nauseous at all. Once you get past the flavor, you will notice they are a breeze to take and they work great.

Since it is made from all organic herbs and foods, the ingredients are non-GMO and completely kosher, so if you have religious biases against certain things, these will work great for you as well. It has digestive enzymes that makes it easier to swallow and even stomach and it is tested to be free of pesticides, dairy, herbicides, soy, and gluten. The facilities that they come from are even FDA registered.

MegaFood – Baby & Me has plenty of iodine, copper and zinc ration and work really well if you have to take any type of daily medications.

The Verdict

Let’s be honest, eating healthy all the time can be hard, especially if you are vegan, because we often are missing out on the right types of vitamins that come from certain foods. So being a pregnant vegan can be a real hit or miss type of issues. Choosing the right prenatal for me was a really difficult choice, but I am glad that I decided to go with MegaFood – Baby & Me. I haven’t been sick, I haven’t had issues taking it and the one issue that I found is the flavor of the pill, which I really couldn’t stand but I no longer really have an issue with. MegaFood – Baby & Me is a great choice for anyone.  A cheaper but really great option you might like to consider is Spring Valley Prenatal Vitamins.  Check out my Spring Valley Prenatal Vitamins review.

Vitafusion Prenatal Gummy Vitamins review

I won’t lie, I am really bad about taking my prenatal vitamins. It isn’t that I don’t want to be good about it, it is just that I take plenty of vitamin pills and I really don’t like taking pills, well who likes to take pills and my prenatal vitamins have always gave me a pretty upset stomach every time that I took them which gave me this unwanted reason to take them ever again. I heard about prenatal gummies which are supposed to be for those of us who tend to get sick from taking pills. I decided to try them out for myself and boy am I glad that I did.

I knew that I needed to try them out and I knew on the days that I had a major sweet tooth, it could be curbed by these gummies. All my friends raved about how great they were and just how awesome they were. I did notice one thing that I wasn’t a fan of and that was the fact that it doesn’t contain Iron. I decided to go ahead and order Vitafusion Prenatal, Gummy Vitamins. When they arrived with my calcium vitamins, they were amazing tasting. Since they have arrived I have managed to take my prenatal vitamins daily without any nausea or upset stomachs. I even managed to get my husband to take the calcium supplement without being forced. The prenatal vitamins are soft and squishy and I love them. It was a new texture that I wasn’t used to but I am glad that I made the switch.

Vitafusion Prenatal, Gummy Vitamins are much easier on the stomach and contain a lot of Folic acid and DHA. They are only made with natural flavors and colors and don’t contain iron so you don’t have to worry about the constipation that sometimes happens. What I love is that I have a dairy allergy and it is peanut, gluten and dairy free. It comes in citrus or creamy berry flavors and contain calcium and Vitamin D. Each serving or gummy will have 500mg of calcium, that means that you will have plenty of support for bone health.

Vitafusion Prenatal, Gummy Vitamins also contain 800mcg of Folic acid which is great, you need to make sure that you get plenty of folic acid during your pregnancy or you could end up with a baby having neural tube defects, which no one wants.

When it comes down to it, these gummies are great and there is not much more that can actually be said about them but just admit that if it wasn’t for not being a fan of pill taking, I would have never learned about these amazing gummies and what they can do for me. I am glad that I began to take them and I recommend them to anyone who hates to take pill vitamins however I don’t consider them to be the best over the counter prenatal vitamins.

Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamin

The nausea and vomiting just keep coming. You’ve tried taking your prenatal vitamins in the morning, with food, and at bedtime, and nothing seems to be helping. You know it’s important to take one, but are there prenatal vitamins on the market that are easier to take than others? The answer is YES!!

Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamin Formula is an over the counter prenatal vitamin that is 50{c16d9381ba9f8cb0dd2d2c564e5ed017ef4da1ad17dd6586ced5f16fa9ac4e11} smaller than other leading brands on the market. In each serving there are 23 vitamins and minerals and three high-quality ingredients.  Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamin Formula is designed for women who are trying to conceive, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.

The 3 high-quality ingredients in Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamin Formula are Choline, Inositol, and Ginger Powder.  Choline helps increase the speed that the neurons fire in your baby’s brain, improving cognitive functioning and long-term memory. Inositol helps reduce the risk of your baby developing a neural tube defect, and Ginger Powder is derived from Ginger Root and helps combat nausea and vomiting. Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamin Formula does not contain the high-quality ingredients CoQ10, DHA, or have any probiotics.

Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamin also has high amounts of folic acid that is important for preventing neural tube defects in your baby, and 1300 mg of Calcium, which is unheard of in most prenatal vitamins. Calcium is very important for the development of your baby’s bones and teeth and is also important for your bone mass as well. Research has shown that if you are deficient in calcium during pregnancy, you are at a greater risk of developing osteoporosis later on in life.

Should You Use Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamin Formula?

As a RN in the OB/GYN field, it is hard for me to see much of a difference between Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamins and other prenatal vitamins on the market. Although the main marketing tool of this product is the smaller size of the tablet, you still have to take 6 tablets daily. Doesn’t seem like much of a break to me.

However, Easy2 Swallow Multi Prenatal Vitamins are economical, and will cost you about $0.37 a day to take them. You will however, be missing out on the amazing benefits that come from taking a high-end prenatal vitamin.

Deva Nutrition Vegan Prenatal Vitamin

Before you give up on finding a decent prenatal vitamin that still allows you to live your vegan lifestyle take a look at a certified vegan product.  Deva Nutrition Vegan Prenatal Vitamin avoids using ingredients derived from animal products so that you can be assured your baby is getting what he needs while you still get to practice your belief in the vegan lifestyle.  It might even help your hair grow.

Even if you are following a healthy diet you are probably lacking in some of the nutrients that are so important for your baby.  For example, folic acid, calcium, and iron have said to be some of the most important nutrients your baby needs.  Iron is usually obtained through animal sources but can also be found in foods like beans and fortified cereal.  To get the most out of eating iron you should have an iron source with vitamin C at the same time because it will help the iron be absorbed better and more efficiently by your body.

Folic acid is probably the most talked about nutrient during pregnancy.  It is essential to prevent birth defects such as neural tube defects which can be devastating for you as a new mother.  To prevent these you need adequate folic acid which Deva Nutrition Vegan Prenatal Vitamin has included.  But you also need another ingredient called inositol because folic acid can only prevent about 70{c16d9381ba9f8cb0dd2d2c564e5ed017ef4da1ad17dd6586ced5f16fa9ac4e11} of NTDs.  Adding inositol can further protect against NTDs giving your baby a better chance of being born without neural tube defects.

Key Nutrients

Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, vitamin E, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B5, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, folic acid, biotin, calcium, iron, iodine, magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, boron, choline, inositol, lutein, PABA, betaine HCL, alfalfa, chamomile, rose hips, acerola extract.

Deva Nutrition Vegan Prenatal Vitamin Safety

Deva Nutrition Vegan Prenatal Vitamin is one of the safest prenatal vitamins and has very few side effects because it can even be used by people who are sensitive to certain foods like wheat, yeast, gluten, milk, sugar, starch, preservatives, and salt.  The most dangerous part of Deva Nutrition Vegan Prenatal Vitamin is that it doesn’t have nearly enough calcium.  If you add a calcium supplement you may be able to use this product and it could still be safe but otherwise it’s not a good idea to prevent your baby from getting enough calcium.

Pros

  • Vegan product
  • Folic acid, iron, and inositol are included in adequate amounts
  • Adds energy
  • Calming on your sensitive tummy
  • Does not have ingredients that you could be sensitive to

Cons

  • Not enough calcium is included
  • Big tablets!

Should You Use Deva Nutrition Vegan Prenatal Vitamin?

If you want to give your baby the best Deva Nutrition Vegan Prenatal Vitamin could help.  Unfortunately, they didn’t include nearly enough calcium so you would need to add another pill to take each day and these are already large tablets to take.  Deva has come through by making a product that can be used by vegans to give them the nutritional content they need without using animal products.

What are chewable prenatal vitamins?

Chewable prenatal vitamins are a combination of vitamins that are normally found in foods and other natural sources that can be chewed instead of swallowed.

The multivitamins are used to provide you with additional vitamins that you need during your pregnancy. Minerals may also be combined with prenatal chewables and they can be used for things other than pregnancy.

Important information that you should know:

You should never take more than your recommended dose of these prenatals. You should also avoid taking any other type of multivitamins within two hours of your chewable vitamin. If you take similar vitamin products together at the same time, you could have a vitamin overdose which could have serious side effects.

If you believe that you have used too much of your vitamins, then you need to seek medical attention. Having an overdose of vitamins K, E, D, or A can cause life threatening or serious side effects and can even harm your unborn child. There are certain minerals that can also cause serious overdose symptoms to you or harm your baby if you take too much of it.

What should you talk about with your doctor before taking Belly Bar Chewable Prenatal Vitamins?

As stated before there are many vitamins that can cause life threatening or serious side effects if they are taken in large doses. So do not take more than is written on the label or that has been prescribed by a doctor.

Before you take any prenatal vitamin, you should talk to your doctor about all of your medical conditions.

You may also need to continue to take your prenatal vitamins if you are planning to breastfeed your child. You should ask your doctor if it would be safe to take these chewables while you are breast feeding.

How should you take Belly Bar Chewables?

You should take these chewables just how it is directed on the label or as your doctor has prescribed. You should not use in large or smaller amounts and for no longer than has been recommended.

You should never take more than the recommended dose.

There are plenty of multivitamin products that contain minerals like iron, potassium, calcium, and zinc. Minerals that are taken within large doses can cause issues such as increased urination, confusion, tooth staining, muscle weakness or limp feeling, stomach bleeding, and uneven heart rate.

Be sure to take your chewable with a full glass of water.

The chewable needs to be chewed or allowed to dissolve within your mouth before you swallow it. You can also allow your chewable to dissolve in fruit juice, drinking water, or infant formula, but no type of dairy products or milk. Be sure to drink the mixture right away.

You should take your chewable daily to ensure that you are getting the most benefits from it. Be sure to get your prenatals refilled before your run out completely. Store them at room temperature and away from moisture and heat. Keep them in their original container as well. If you store them in a glass container it could ruin the medication.

What will happen if I miss a dose?

Ensure that you take your missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is about time for your next scheduled dose. Never take extra prenatals to make up for your missed dose.

Overdose Symptoms

If you believe that you have overdosed seek medical attention or call your local poison help line.

Overdose symptoms can include vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, diarrhea, hair loss, constipation, peeling skin, changes in menstrual periods, tingly feeling in or around your mouth, severe headache, weight loss, severe back pain, pale skin, muscle or joint pain, blood in your urine, as well as easy bleeding or bruising.

Side Effects of Prenatals

You should always check with your doctor if some of the common side effects become too bothersome or if they continue during your time taking the prenatal.

Common side effects include constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach, vomiting, and darkened or green stools.

It is quite possible that there are some side effects that have not been reported for these prenatals.

Key Nutrients

There are quite a few nutrients included in Belly Bar Chewable Prenatal Vitamins.  It has Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Calcium, Iron, and Zinc.  These are all necessary nutrients for your baby’s development but it is still lacking a ton of the nutrients you need.  The top prenatal vitamins have at least 22 nutrients whereas this has only 13.  That’s barely over half of what the best products have.  That can mean that you may have to take these chewables with other types of prenatals in order to get the right types of nutrients that you need for you and your baby.

Another way in which Belly Bar Chewable Prenatal Vitamin is lacking is in the amount of these ingredients.  Some of them like folic acid and iron are included in the right amounts but others are severely lacking in what you need.  Calcium is one of the ingredients that is absolutely necessary for your baby’s development and Belly Bar Chewable Prenatal Vitamin has only 15{c16d9381ba9f8cb0dd2d2c564e5ed017ef4da1ad17dd6586ced5f16fa9ac4e11} of the recommended daily value.  With the lacking of the right amount of minerals and vitamins that you need, it would be best if you went with another type of prenatal and make it one that contains everything that you need for your baby.

Other ingredients that are needed to make this a better product are CoQ10, probiotics, and DHA.  These ingredients can improve the health of your baby, can make it easier for you to lose your baby fat, and can even improve your baby’s memory and cognition.  Without these ingredients, you may still have a healthy baby, but you both would be lacking in certain areas when it comes to vitamins.

Safety

Belly Bar Chewable Prenatal Vitamins is a safe prenatal vitamin although it could use more of the needed nutrients.  There can be some side effects as listed above, but that is normal with any type of prenatal vitamin.

Pros

  • Includes 13 vitamins and minerals
  • Has 800 mg of folic acid
  • Chewable and several flavors

Cons

  • Does not contain enough calcium
  • Is lacking in other key ingredients
  • Has some pretty weird side effects

Should You Use Belly Bar Chewable Prenatal Vitamins?

Your baby needs more of these key nutrients so in that regard Belly Bar Chewable Prenatal Vitamins is not the best choice.  But if you are getting enough calcium or the other ingredients through your diet then maybe it will be enough.  I wouldn’t want my baby to not get enough of the key nutrients that he needs because I didn’t take the right prenatal vitamin.  Instead I would recommend that you take a top prenatal vitamin that has adequate amounts of each of the key nutrients.

That could mean that you take a different type of prenatal vitamin. There are plenty of versions out there that will have the right type of ingredients that you need to ensure that you and your baby are getting everything that you need in order to be healthy.  If you’re looking for an alternative to Belly Bar Chewable Prenatal vitamins try Vitafusion Prenatal Gummy Vitamins or if you’re looking for something easy to swallow try Spring Valley Prenatal Multivitamin.

The best Nature made prenatal multi vitamins are those that are USP verified. This proves that the supplement is of high quality. Prenatal multi vitamins contain the following essential vitamins and minerals:

  1. Iron which is vital for the formation of red blood cells and for the delivery of oxygen throughout the body. During pregnancy, the daily requirement of iron increases.
  2. Calcium and Vitamin D which help to build and support strong bones
  3. Folic acid which facilitates proper development of the baby’s nervous system.
  4. Vitamin A which supports strong healthy eye function.
  5. B vitamins that support cellular energy production.
  6. Vitamin C and E which provide antioxidant support that neutralizes free radicals.
  7. Vitamins C, D and A, and Zinc that boost the immune system.

Vitamin C and Zinc are the leading components in most nature made prenatal multi vitamins. Some nature made prenatal vitamins also contain omega- 3 fatty acids which play an important role in brain and eye development, especially during the critical period of fetal development and infancy.

Nature made pre natal multi vitamins do not have artificial flavors, color additions or preservatives and they are gluten free. Most nature made prenatal vitamins are taken as one tablet per day with a meal.

Nature made prenatal multivitamins are really great value. There different types and sizes of such prenatal multi vitamins available in the market. They all have the same basic components of a nature made prenatal vitamin as stated above but each type also has an additional special component such as DHA. They come packed in different sizes based on the number of pills- 60 tablets, 90 tablets, 150 tablets and 250 tablets.

If you are taking any other medications, you are advised to see a health care professional before using these products since potential drug-nutrient interaction may occur leading to undesirable effects such as diminished drug effectiveness, reduced supplement effectiveness and impaired drug/supplement absorption. In addition to this, accidental overdose of iron containing products causes fatal poisoning in children. The multi vitamins should be kept out of children’s reach but in case an overdose happens, contact a doctor or a poison center immediately.

Pros:

  • They are simple to take
  • They are easy on the stomach
  • They are effective.
  • They are easy to swallow

Cons:

  • Can only be used with a doctor’s permission.

Nature made prenatal multi vitamins are safe for use and provide nutritional supplements for both the unborn child and the mother. They are therefore best used daily with meals by pregnant women. There are no outright weaknesses of taking them and they are highly recommended.

I bought these with a recommendation from my doctor. I was told that it is great because they are broke down into two types, Prenatal One and Certified Organics. Both are great, especially if you are expecting or have a new baby. I started taking these when I first found out that I was pregnant and I am glad that I settled on the Prenatal One Multivitamin. They contain potent minerals and vitamins that are found in super-food extracts ,and you only have to take it once a day. It contains things like ginger juice, probiotics, and plant source enzymes which help to support the absorption and digestion, so that means no upset stomach. It is all natural and vegan/vegetarian friendly which is great for a lot of people out there. It is wheat, sugar, gluten, yeast, and dairy free. Which means that it is safe, considering it also doesn’t have any lactose, artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, additives or sweeteners. There are so many more that I could name, but there would never be enough time, so let’s talk about the pro’s and con’s.

Pro’s:

  • Safe for your tummy
  • Inexpensive
  • Vegan/vegetarian friendly
  • No man made chemicals
  • Plenty of probiotics

Con’s:

  • The pill is a bit big
  • Can be hard to swallow without a lot of water

Overall, I am very happy that my doctor recommended Rainbow Light Just Once Prenatal One Multivitamin. I never had an issue with them making my stomach upset or causing me to feel nauseous. I love the fact that it contains probiotics, it is great for those who have constipation during their pregnancies, which is a very common thing for many women. This 100{c16d9381ba9f8cb0dd2d2c564e5ed017ef4da1ad17dd6586ced5f16fa9ac4e11} natural vitamin is definitely what you need. It can be really hard to choose the right one and depending on your own health, the right one can be hard to find on your own. I tend to like things to be more organic and not so many chemicals as natural type of things. I have a friend who is a vegetarian and she recommended that I try this when I was pregnant with my first child.

This Prenatal vitamin has everything you need, except it doesn’t contain DHA, which I have noticed comes in a lot of other prenatal vitamins. I just wanted something that would be easy on my stomach, and not full of harsh chemicals. What makes these prenatals better than others is the fact that it contains no fillers or binders, its dairy and gluten free, as well as the fact that is untreated, unadulterated and uncooked. That made me wonder why should I go raw? The whole reason is that when you eat any type of raw foods, the nutrients stay as well as the probiotics and enzymes that are normally destroyed when they are cooked. I was told that folic acid is the best thing, until I spoke to my doctor who stated while folic acid is good, if it’s found in natural foods, the best in a prenatal vitamin is actually Folate. The RAW Prenatal contains that and more.

What this prenatal vitamin offers that others do not, is the ginger. Ginger is a natural relief for morning sickness, which I had constantly. When I first got these, I noticed that you could really taste the ginger when they are taken. It isn’t a flavor that I enjoy at all and the pills are larger than I actually expected as well. When I took these, I noticed that I wasn’t as tired, and everything about this vitamin helped to make my pregnancy so much easier. Let’s talk about the pro’s and con’s.

Pro’s:

  • All the vitamins needed
  • Contains ginger which eases morning sickness
  • Easy on the stomach
  • All natural

Con’s:

  • These pills are bit on the bigger side
  • The ginger taste
  • No DHA

Overall, this is a great prenatal for anyone. The fact that it is made all natural and it doesn’t contain all of the harsh chemicals that normally make your stomach turn, is a definite plus in my book. I also loved the fact that it was easier to take then any other vitamin and it helped get rid of my morning sickness, even though there is that nasty ginger taste, it does get easier to deal with as time goes on. I can honestly say that Vitamin Code RAW Prenatal Vitamin by Garden of Life is one thing that I will recommend and even use again myself.
